October Roundtable
Has Covid-19 Damaged China’s Status as an Emerging Superpower?
Isabel Hilton, editor-in-chief of bilingual, China-focused website chinadiaolgue.net, Sarah Liu, Lecturer in Gender and Politics at the University of Edinburgh, and George Magnus, former Chief Economist at UBS and author of Red Flags: Why Xi’s China is in Jeopardy, all discussed whether China’s early handling of the pandemic had led to its fall from grace, and how it has reshaped its relationships with governments both friendly and perhaps more hostile.
November Roundtable
2021: China’s Next Steps
In November, we were graced with the presence of Kerry Brown, Professor of Chinese Studies and Director of the Lau China Institute at King’s College, London, and Jeremy Goldkorn, editor-in-chief of SupChina, and co-host of the hugely popular Sinica podcast, discussing “2021: China’s Next Steps”. In the context of the Chinese Communist Party’s 5th Plenum Communiqué and Joe Biden’s Win in November’s US Presidential Election, our guests discussed how China’s leadership is likely to carve out increasingly isolationist policies and the reconstruction of bilateral relations between the US and China.
November Mentoring Talk
In November, we held our first mentoring talk aimed at encouraging pupils to study Chinese at university. In addition to pupils from local schools in Edinburgh, there were also pupils from across the UK in attendance. We covered topics such as why Chinese is an advantageous subject to study, UCAS application tips and then held a Q&A with a panel of current students. If you are considering studying Chinese at university, don’t hesitate to get in touch and we will be more than happy to answer your questions.
